Council coordinates a diverse program of cultural events, cultural development issues and cultural policies in Sutherland Shire.
Annual calendar of events
Council organises or assists with many cultural events within the Shire. These include:
- Australia Day celebrations at Cronulla Beach. Concert performances and fireworks.
- Coffee at Peace - The Sutherland Shire Coffee Festival. Coffee, arts and crafts, live entertainment, childrens' activities and the Lifeline Bookfair right next door. Come down to Peace Park, Eton Street, Sutherland next July to enjoy the coffee experience!
- Markets at Hazelhurst - a great family day (or night) out; free entertainment, art and craft stalls and more!
- Cinema under the stars - rug up and bring the whole family for a magical experience; different film screened each year in the month of May - rated G.
- Heritage Festival - a celebration of the natural, built and cultural heritage of Sutherland Shire run during the National Trust Heritage Festival
- NAIDOC Week - celebrating the uniqueness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions and cultures
- Fiesta - enjoy a celebration of international culture through food, music, dancing, art and a sky full of colour!
- Access: Arts - an arts project involving people with a disability and in conjunction with International Day of People with a DisAbility
- Seniors' Christmas Concert - a fun, entertaining program held at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre, Eton Street, Sutherland

Community Arts Policies
This policy can be downloaded below, or email culture@ssc.nsw.gov.au or contact the Cultural Planning and Events unit on 9710 0333.
This is a 17-page policy document with statements on community arts, children, youth, family, older people, people with a disability, people from a non-English speaking background, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, exhibition and workshop space, art in public spaces, new estate areas, and strategy for cultural planning.
Filming in the Shire
Sutherland Shire Council is 'film friendly' and this policy was written to encourage film projects in the Shire. Income received from filming fees will be directed local film projects. To read more on filming in the Sutherland Shire and to download the Sutherland Shire Film Policy, click here.

Annual Community Arts Grants
2011 Arts Grants open from 2nd August 2010 to 1 October 2010.
Sutherland Shire Council is commited to act as a catalyst in the development of cultural services and programs for Sutherland Shire residents and makes funds available under its Community Arts Grants Program to local non-profit community groups for music, performing arts, visual arts, craft and other local cultural initiatives.
Innovative projects that contribute to the cultural development of the Sutherland Shire are encouraged.
All applications require an official completed Community Arts Grants application form. We recommend that the guidelines are read through carefully.
Community Arts Grants Application forms and Guidelines are available from the Cultural Planning and Events Unit of council and via this webpage when the funding round is open. Each funding round is advertised in the St. George and Sutherland Shire Leader and on council's website.
Community Arts Grants are now open. Deadline for applications is 4pm, Friday 1 October 2010.
