Identification and control of Cane Toads (Bufo marinus) in the Taren Point/Caringbah area

Sutherland Shire Council (SSC) and the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) have become aware of the presence of an increasing number of Cane Toads in the Taren Point/Caringbah area.

Cane Toads are listed as a "Key Threatening Process" under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 and Council's control program, with assistance from the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority, aims to significantly reduce the population and potential impact of this pest species on the environment of the Sutherland Shire. The control program will include:

• a survey to establish the size and distribution of the Cane Toad population
• a study of the breeding viability of the population,
• assistance to residents/occupiers in identification and removal of Cane Toads,
• support in trapping and control operations in appropriate circumstances.

Suspected Cane Toad sightings should be reported to either SSC or NPWS for collection and identification. Residents should not destroy any animals as there are numerous native frog species in the area that can be confused with Cane Toads.

Control procedures will be conducted in a humane and safe manner in accordance with recommendations from the RSPCA.

If you have any enquiries regarding this program, require additional information or would like to report any suspected Cane Toad sightings please contact Sutherland Shire Council's Pest Species Officer on 9710 0333 or the National Parks & Wildlife Service on 9668 2000.
